In reading over the stories of the birth of Jesus in the gospels one of the things that stood out to me was the fact that much of what happened around this miraculous birth occurred during the hours of the night. Luke tells us that at the time of the birth of the Christ there were shepherds keeping watch over their flocks at night, when the angel of the Lord appeared to them(Luke 2: 1-14)
Matthew’s gospel tells us that the Wise Men followed a star at night to the place where the Christ child was born. Matthew also informs us that it was night when Joseph took Mary and the child Jesus to depart to Egypt, learning that King Herod had intended to search for and kill the child Jesus (Matthew 2: 1-15)
In the same manner the Gospel of John, when it describes the birth of the Christ child, speaks of Christ as the ‘true light that was coming into the world”. John says of Jesus, “He was the light of men”. The Gospel of John goes on to say, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness ha
