Memorial Day Weekend is upon us. For some, it will be the beach and hot dogs with a few beers. For others, it will be parades and flowers and somber remembrances.
For the Church, it’s actually Ascension Sunday, the day each year we remember not only the death of the One who gave his life for us, but also his rising (not from death to Earth) but to Heaven from Earth. It’s the day the Resurrected Jesus commands his disciples to spread his love and power to all the ends of the earth, and then he soars up and leaves them to do it. (Of course he sends his Spirit to help but that’s next week’s celebration - Pentecost). So while we remember all who have given of themselves for others (military, civic, and religious servants), we also remember what Christ is asking of us. So read the passage for this sermon and ask yourself, "what one thing, taught by Jesus, am I needing to remember at such a time as this?"
