Director of the Year Finalist and VCU Chief of Police John Venuti describes the efforts his department and university have taken to keep off-campus parties safe. Parties are a fact of life and a rite of passage for most college students. Although most events go off without a hitch, every so often off-campus parties become a problem for the surrounding community and campus law enforcement. Students intending to have 50 guests at their event could find themselves trying to accommodate 500 uninvited attendees prompted by postings on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Perhaps the party gets too loud, or worse, a sexual assault occurs.
To address the challenges commonly associated with these parties, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) has worked diligently with its neighbors and landlords of student off-campus housing.
