Is Your Organization Prepared for an Emergency?

Kutztown University of Pennsylvania Director of the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, and Director of the Year finalist Steven Helms discusses the importance of NIMS and ICS.Universities, schools and hospitals just love their acronyms. There is NFPA, IACLEA, NECUSA, CCUPCA,  IAHSS, CMS, OCR, CDC, CALEA, ASR, CSA … the list goes on and on. But there are two abbreviations that all campuses should pay particular attention to: NIMS, which stands for the National Incident Management System, and ICS, which stands for the Incident Command System.  The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers training for campuses as well as many other types of organizations so they can successfully use NIMS and ICS during emergencies.

This type of training is extremely important because organizations that experience an emergency and don’t incorporate NIMS and ICS run the risk of losing or not being eligible for some federal funding. So how does your campus go about obtaining this
