Conroe, Texas, Independent School District Police Chief and Campus Safety Director of the Year finalist William Harness describes the lessons he and his district have learned from implementing the community policing model.Many U.S. law enforcement agencies have embraced the community policing model as a way to develop better relationships with the communities they serve. School district, university and hospital protection professionals have become particularly fond of this approach, believing that a focus on collaboration, prevention and intervention goes a long way toward maintaining a safe and secure learning environment.
One school district that has adopted this model is the Conroe, Texas, Independent School District, led by William Harness, its chief of police. Harness, who is also one of Campus Safety magazine’s director of the year finalists, uses community policing to help school law enforcement officers, administrators, parents, students and the community at large ensure child
