Episode 154: Fat Pipe, Thin Pipe

Episode 154: Fat Pipe, Thin Pipe

Continuing from last week, we talk about games as narrative experiences and how they are not up to the task no matter what kind of game they are: rich narrative rollercoaster or emergent sandbox.  One gives the player no influence over the game world to serve lame stories and the other gives the player a lot of input, but at the expense of meaningful narrative. When "story" games try to involve the player with more than a rudimentary effect on the world, they often become more about "talking to people" and "picking things up and looking at them". This negates player agency and makes it less of a game.  We're spending all this time and money trying increase the Fat Pipe, when games demand that the player's Thin Pipe be expanded (or enlarged, lol!)
