Freedom is a good thing. Freedom let Microsoft pull a 180 on plans for the Xbone. Freedom allowed Sony to price their machine at $100 cheaper than the competition. EA is free to overhaul Origin, as they say they are planning to.
Games can give us a lot of freedom. Freedom to explore, freedom to follow through with the errands people want us to do, and freedom to abandon them. Some developers want to restrict, and to remove these freedoms in pursuit of some vainglorious "filmic" ideal of linear, story-centric design, film grain, and water droplets on the camera.
But you will know that your freedom has been removed when you have been found to be in possession of obscene materials featuring underage subjects, like that guy from Precursor Games.
