This week on Where the road takes me, we look into the history of Bandon Community Hospital. ‘From Workhouse to Cottage Hospital to state of the art facility’ is a two part programme which begins this Sunday evening at 7.

Workhouse historian Peter Higginbotthom tells us that workhouses weren’t the terrible places that Charles Dickens led us to believe. We hear how Bandon Poor Law Union oversaw the construction of the Bandon Workhouse in 1840.

Retired Staff Nurse Maureen Mehigan recalls her early days in what was then a Cottage hospital.
Ninety one year old Joe Quinn sings the praises of the hospital and recalls growing up in the West of Ireland during the worst storm in Ireland’s history in 1947.
