If the gospel is the “power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek” (Rom. 1:16), then why are so many Jews rejecting the salvation of the gospel? And even more troubling, how is God trustworthy in our own salvation if His promises in the Old Testament have not come to pass for so many Israelites, the people to whom they were given? Has the word of God failed?
These are the issues Paul takes up in Romans 9-11 as he offers “The Defense of the Gospel” by defending the trustworthiness of God, His purposes in election, and His saving design that “all Israel will be saved” (Romans 11:26).
