Recently on a Facebook page of producers there has been a lot of discussion on the role of the DJ. What is the role of a DJ? Is a producer who preforms a DJ too? Is it more important play what's hot or to help expand the listeners horizons with less well known artists? Is it ok to "button push", that is synch up your set in a compy and pretend you're playing something like a keyboard or midi controller?
All that talk made me think about when I DJ'ed in earnest. Serendipitously I came across this mix which is a good example of my style. It was not super technical, but rather more fluid. I never choose a set before hand. I always tried to play a variety of artists from a variety of genres all while trying to stay in the same musical space. I try to take listeners on a journey.
