Paul continues his instruction concerning the relationships within the church by giving an exhortation concerning the church's care of their elders. Paul was instructing Timothy and the Ephesian church in relation to the care of elders and the elder's responsibility to care for the congregation. Mutual respect, love and accountability seem to be in view in this passage.
The church demonstrates its esteem for the Word and the glory of God by the way in which they care for their elders, pastors/teachers. Too often the reputation of the church is tarnished by the way they mistreat the Lord's servants. In this passage Paul directs the church concerning these relationships.
