In the spring of 1997, I was part of an informal DJ and filmmaking collective in Boulder, Colorado, that envisioned staging a series of classic films set to contemporary electronic music soundtracks, mixed live. For me, there was a short list of films - all from the Silent Era - that immediately came to mind. Having always have been influenced by the Sci-Fi innovations and imagery of Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" (1927), and particularly the 1984 restoration by electronic music pioneer Giorgio Moroder, I felt I could empower the film with a much more musically stylized, narrative, and purely Science Fiction soundtrack than the one Moroder himself had scored. This wasn't a criticism of Moroder's capabilities, nor a comparison of myself to the genius of Moroder, but more a reflection of my overall dissatisfaction of some of the artists and musical choices he had made for that restoration. Recorded live at a red wine bar called Mars in Boulder, in 1997, and remastered from DAT in 2013.
