Merdeka Special: Preserving Our Built Heritage

Merdeka Special: Preserving Our Built Heritage

The country is celebrating its 59th Independence Day, but we have done little to preserve our pre-independence built heritage. Architect Greg Dall took great care to preserve what is now known as the Pentago House, a shop house which was originally built in 1912 by Loke Yew. Earmarked for demolition, the architect worked with ageing tradesmen on the restoration works to bring it back to it's previous glory. We discuss his efforts and the need to preserve what's left of our historical buildings in the city, and the benefits such acts can bring to a city's character.
