The ones who are lost, the ones who need to repent, the ones the Father is eager to welcome home, the ones Jesus has in mind when he tells the three parables—it’s not the tax collectors and the sinners. They were already repenting, and heaven was already celebrating over them. But heaven was still waiting on the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law. They were the truly lost ones, the lost sheep, the lost coins, the lost sons. They were the ones who really needed to repent.
