During a humid day in Montreal, we were visited by the critically-acclaimed novelist Padma Viswanathan and the poet/translator Geoffrey Brock. Brock had just completed his editing of The FSG Book of Twentieth-Century Italian Poetry (FSG 2012) and kindly offered his time.
Padma is a Canadian playwright and fiction writer, whose short stories have appeared in numerous publications. She holds degrees (U of Arizona, John Hopkins, U of Alberta) and has received several fellowships. Here, she reads from her novel The Toss of a Lemon (Random House 2008), shortlisted for Amazon’s First Novel Award and the Commonwealth Writers’ Best First Book Award.
A translator of six books, Brock holds a MFA from U of Florida and a PhD in Comparative Literature from U of Pennsylvania and is recipient of the Guggenheim, Stegner and NEA fellowships. He has published a highly lauded poetry book, Weighing Light (Ivan R. 2005), and has also published his work widely and highly.
