Malialina Derden is an Afro-Pinoy writer and student who was born and raised in Oahu. She resides in Pennsylvania where she is currently attending the Community College of Philadelphia. In 2017 Malia served as an AmeriCorps VISTA member for the “Returning to Our Roots’’ program at Kokua Kalihi Valley medical clinic, as a story collector and capacity builder. Malia is proud to have been brought up in Kalihi, and is a 2014 graduate of Farrington High School. She attributes much of who she is today to afterschool programs like the Gay Straight Alliance at Farrington, Pacific Tongues, and Hawaii Women in Filmmaking. Malia is most inspired by her mother and the stories of the people around her.
