Staying Healthy Host Jeff Burke, N.D., M.H., and Val John Anderson discuss the shortfalls of modern food, i.e., that crops are grown in mineral- and nutrient- deficient soils. Further, today's modern, processed foods (further depleted of minerals but loaded with artificial flavors) can trick the senses and keep a person from eating a healthy, minerally balanced diet. Our senses, specifically taste, serve as a guide to choose right foods to put into our bodies. For example, we are thirsty because we need water, a craving for salt can indicate a need electrolytes, a sour foods craving can indicate a need for vitamin C and other nutrients in balance with vitamin C; finally, a craving for umami (savory) may indicate a need protein and amino acids.
