Today's guest, Daniel Handler, is the author of the novels The Basic Eight, Watch Your Mouth, Adverbs, and recently, Why We Broke Up, which was awarded a Printz Honor. Under the name Lemony Snicket he has penned all the novels in the internationally bestselling A Series Of Unfortunate Events, the books in the series, All The Wrong Questions, and last month released the picture book, The Dark, illustrated by Cadlecott medalist Jon Klassen. The adjunct accordionist for the pop group The Magnetic Fields, Mr. Handler lives in San Francisco with his wife, the illustrator Lisa Brown, and one curious child.
We caught up with Daniel to ask him about stealing from Raymond Chandler, why he would never make it out of a burning library alive, and what drove him to keep writing in the days before he found commercial success.
