"Middle Of The Road" music from France Inter, a government controlled "generalist" radio network, part of Radio France. It's almost continuous music illustrating the taste of the staff and management because at about 37 minutes into this recording, an announcer informs us the network is in the midst of a 24 hour strike. But maybe this was better than the regular programmes ... ?
Although commercial radio thrived in France before World War II, in 1945 the government decided on a state-run broadcasting monopoly. This led to severe competition from powerful "peripheral" commercial stations such as RTL (Luxembourg), Europe 1 from Germany, Monte Carlo and others. Commercial radio on French soil was permitted once again from about 1978.
