In 1986 two young vinyl collecting lunatics found themselves fighting over the same LPs at the closing down sale of the record library in Grahamstown, a small university town in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Nodding acquaintances from Politics 1 lectures at Rhodes, the two now recognised each other as kindred spirits. Leon had a car to transport the box of loot and Brett had a turntable in his res room. They drank cheap Johnny Walker and played records long into the night. Leon asked Brett join him on his newly blagged show on Rhodes Music Radio as his resident "Musical Gynaecologist". It was an offer that could not be refused.
The Hallucinogenic Wasteland ran for three years, with occasional periods of silence - as the pair fought with station management to be exempt from the playlist and to be allowed to play what the hell they liked: classic rock, jazz, the avant garde and the alternative. Anything but pop or disco!
30 years later the pair are still making radio shows!
