When is a bossa nova dodgy? When is it whimsical? Silly? When it isn't serious, its not cool, like its trying too hard. You have to understand that when the first bossa nova albums were released in the USA they started a fad. Copycats and uncreative singers and musicians worked elements of the sound, or sometimes just the word "bossa" into their songs. It was passed along to the large American market as the new thing, the latest Latin dance. What these songs do often have is a catchy dance beat and a vague connection to the Brazilian roots of the Bossa Nova sound. If you can get past the easy listening or pop production then the songs are enjoyable.
