Vanessa Lacey is one of the most high profile transgender people in Ireland. She is widely respected for her tireless efforts to improve the status of the transgender community, through her advocacy and educational educational work. Vanessa is also a parent and husband, who's true gender is not recognised under Ireland law, a discrimination she has been in the vanguard in trying to change. Invited to address to a Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination, Vanessa impressed an international audience with a highly personal address of her experiences of growing up transgender in Ireland. She calls for greater education support, and wider access to treatment services for transgender people as an essential first step.Vanessa highlights the urgency for introducing such measures by referencing the alarming statistics for transgender suicides, self-harming and unemployment.
