Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, received a mixed reception when she addressed delegates at the 4th European Transgender Council meeting at Dublin City University. Delegates were encouraged to hear the Minister concede the Irish Government had failed to protect Human Rights of the Transgender community and planned to introduce draft Gender Identity legislation. Her proposals audibly disappointed many delegates who were hoping Minister Bruton would announced a more inclusive interpretation of the High Court's ruling. Instead she announced that the draft legislation would be submitted to a Joint Oireachtas (parliament) Commitee, for review and that stakeholders such as TENI would be invited to make submissions to that body.
