I find a particular pleasure in covers: they have a capacity to 1) make you re-evaluate tunes you didn't care for by showing the song in a different light; 2) vocalize opinions with your nearest and dearest; or 3) simply breathe new life or variation into a favorite that's been played to death.
My first experience of hearing how pop music was made was watching my uncle's band rehearse in my nan's living room when I must have been about 5 years old. I would sit for hours watching them play. I particularly remember a tune they played called "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." When I heard that tune on the radio later in the week I said, "That's my uncles' band!" to which everyone said, "Your uncle is in the Beatles?!"
