David Byrne Presents: The World’s Inspiration - Africa

David Byrne Presents: The World’s Inspiration - Africa

Africa is big and diverse- to group songs from the whole continent together is insane - it would be like a playlist that includes Bluegrass, Hip hop, EDM, metal, ambient and gospel.

The other thought is how much we, the world, owe to African music- wind the clock back 200 years- did anything sound remotely like it does now? To a large extent the way the worlds pop music sounds and is organized can be traced back to Africa. The colonials did incredible harm and damage, but in the process their minds and bodies were colonized.

Yes. How much is your monthly subscription? Do you do more 80s songs like new wave similar to this?

I’m in love with Sharhabil Ahmed. He had two albums (that I’ve found thanks to this playlist). The album on which “Argo Farfish” lives is bananas good. The beginning of “El Bambi” reminds of the end of the Kink’s song, “Picture Book.”

What a great set! I think there's an error in the playlist, though: Where you have "Toboli" by Dela Botri, I think it's actually "Obi" by Kontihehe. And gladly, too: what a great tune Obi is!

Great stuff, David! You won't remember us but we (Arling & Cameron) were DJ-ing together in Austin eons ago. I believe it was your first live DJ set and we had to explain the equipment to you. Your lack of DJ skills (then) was compensated by your enthusiasm and by the energy and inspiration you radiated. Your a true artist. We're honoured to have been standing next to you at that gig. And the eclectisism of your set inspired us ever after to not get stuck in 'styles' and 'purisms'.
