Playing tracks by
Photek and Todd Terry.
In 1999 and 2000 two albums were released by two legends of their respective scenes. US House master Todd Terry and Drum n Bass innovator Photek swapped their genres and the world was blessed with two remarkable albums that saw the producers step outside of their comfort zones and undertake something sonically fresh.
It's interesting to hear their different approaches to the opposing genres. I'm especially fond of Todd Terry's decision to have straight up Hip Hop MCs lace his tracks with lyrics that at first seem at odds with the music, but over time they fit like old jeans.
Whilst Photek's house orientated tracks are bursting at the seams with a weight that can often be lacking in the genre.
Both are very different LPs and at the time provoked varying critical/fan reactions, but I hope this mix offers a little insight into the importance of producers trying something different from their usual fare.
