The Genre Creeps - A is for Roy AYERS

Playing tracks by

(Mr LOBS MIX) Roy Ayers, Roy Ayers, (MR MAC'S MIX) The Pimps Of Joytime (feat Roy Ayers), Digable Planets, Pete Rock & CL Smooth and more.

When we chose to do Roy Ayers, I thought back to the the first time I saw him in concert in 1990 at Ronnie Scott's in London. I still remember sitting in those plush red booths with my girl, digging on his funky jazz sound. Man that was the first time I'd seen anyone play Vibraphone since primary school and Roy was just so damn cool.

Personally I have a bent towards early 70's jazz funk fusions as opposed to the later 70's and disco, which I am not a fan of. So with this selection I've gone for more of Roy's funky stuff from the early to mid 70s.

“You kinda just fall into him” I was told this about his music a long time ago and Its true. See it's like this, you know Roy’s music even if you think you don’t. Its everywhere across all genres. It could be a sample, guest appearance or production of another artist. Then there is the moment when you discover Everybody Loves the Sunshine and go AHH that’s Roy Ayers.

Enjoy
