A programme dedicated to the great works of these two seemingly opposed eras. One was influenced by the use of music for religious ends but it included the birth of opera; the other was a reaction against the classical constraints of form and elegance - breaking down the barriers and urging music to have a great emotional outpouring using every instrument available. Yet both eras found a connection to the human conditions that speak across the centuries
