But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
---Jesus Christ

As I, Simply Drink My Tea
by: George Waldrop

let the tea steep, as you light the day's first cigarette
smoke rises, spoon-poke the heavy tea bags, and wait
a cup of joy, cup of awake, cup of calm, cups of zen
the hot water of conversation, learning where you end
then I begin, think about respect, how it is a form of love
in the grander picture, respect to care and think about you
I know, time has told me, life has showed me, that to listen
is more than just kindness, listening is more than just respect
listening is not to neglect, as I write this with much time to reflect
listening to my true friends, the ones that matter, it makes amends
as I, simply drink my tea, up to me to contemplate the meaning of free
as I, simply drink my tea, I get to deconstruct, become the kind of poet
that makes me who I am, the adult man, to be insightful and demand
thoughts, feelings & emotions into defining poems, into truthful words

there is a lump in my throat, to plagiarize many quotes
like once when I used tracing paper, taking notes how to draw
the art teacher didn't know, but she praised me and what she saw
that encouragment helped me see, that I was a great artist
that the artist, in me, is meant to be, knowing it is meant to be
makes for simplicity, like the great artists, take the hard parts of life
and makes them easy, easily made, for everyone to see that they
can be an artist too, not to be just like you, shone to identify individuality
knowing human nature is a legacy handed down from the past
insight into underlying truth and awareness to share before you pass
clear and certain with ideas of apprehension to see the strife
I am the actual essence of inward nature, the philosophy of life

engaged in mental health awareness, some can't see through their fears
see through thoughtful eyes to a clear reality, just to see the people all
around them not have it so badly as you or me, makes one feel very alone
I am not like those people, the people that have the time to think
the time to tell themselves, "that person has it worse than me", without
confronting the real problems within themselves, comparing to someone
else, their problems go unsolved, always comparing to someone else
content with a feeling of ease, not getting help for a better quality of life
but that is just one way to live, I taught myself, learned all thoughout my midlife
to let it go, think for myself, not compare myself to anyone else
as I, simply drink my tea, up to me to contemplate the meaning of free
yes, it's up to me to contemplate the meaning of free
