Solid Steel (7th December) We finish our week of celebrations for 30 Years of Solid Steel where it all started, with a mix by Detroit Techno legend Juan Atkins and Ninja Tune founders Coldcut. Juan Atkins was the guest on the first Solid Steel show in December 1988 with and you can also hear that mix and interview by Coldcut at http://solidsteel.net/
Recalling his experience appearing on pirate radio station Kiss FM, Juan told us: “I remember doing the show with Coldcut in 1988 from someone’s apartment, like on the 9th floor or so in what seemed to be a huge apartment building. I was amazed by all of the pirate radio stations in London that were introducing the UK to all the new music, music styles, and genres. We had nothing like that in the USA. Pirate radio stations in the UK were responsible for this music making it into the charts as well”
