London’s leading choro specialists, Alvorada, dropped into SOAS with a delicious appetiser of their forthcoming concert at the Brunei Gallery on November 1st ! Playing tunes from their debut album, ‘First Light’, the group thrilled us on SOAS Radio, and then in the student bar, with their impromptu sets, beaming the sun from Rio De Janeiro into grey, soggy Bloomsbury! Choro is the lively, instrumental music style born in nineteenth century Brazil, which Alvorada fuse with Jazz, samba, and baiao. It’s a genre which came out of intimate bars/rodas, where musicians are grouped closely together right in the thick of the crowd, and that’s precisely how Alvorada play, huddled together like a tight-knit family of virtuosos, skilfully improvising through challenging & intricate rhythms.
