The deaths at the hands of police of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and now Freddie Gray, to name only the most high-profile examples, have prompted a new Civil Rights movement in the USA, demanding an end to police brutality and discrimination against black people. The marches and civil disobedience of this movement have been accompanied by a wave of songs that give musical voice to these demands. These songs have predominantly come from hip-hop and RnB artists, including some of the most high-profile names in these scenes, such as Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys and John Legend. This show will play songs by these and lesser-known artists associated with the #BlackLivesMatter movement, and discuss whether these contributions are the most vital political music being made today.
