Hosts: Aaron Bornstein and Max Liboiron
Guests: Eugenia Manwelyan, Program Director of Eco-Practicum; and Tal Berry, Occupy Wall Street.
Our guests are representatives of a nonprofit called Eco-practicum (http://www.ecopracticum.com/), an environmental sustainability and action program for undergraduate students and recent grads. We discuss the problems capitalism presents to environmentalists using some of the core issues of Occupy Wall Street. While global environmental issues such as climate change "affect everyone," they affect everyone differently, and environmental burdens are borne by those with less money and power, particularly in Third Wold countries. Likewise, the top 1% of the world produce the majority of greenhouse gases. How can environmentalists deal with this distribution of environmental degradation? Overall, we cover various ways that environmentalists and Occupiers are dealing with the same issues, and how capitalism threatens sustainability writ large.
