VICTOR & ZACK LYSTEDT on Everyday Parenting with Lisa Hein

Victor & Zack know firsthand what brain injury, caused by playing football, is about. When Zack was in middle school, he suffered a concussion and prematurely returned to the game. Although he was sidelined for 3 plays before half-time, he went back in. After a hard play in the 2nd half, Zack collapsed on the field and was airlifted to a medical center where he underwent emergency life-saving surgery to remove the left and right side of his skull to relieve the pressure from the swelling of his brain.
He remained in a coma for three months, stayed in a nursing home for 4 weeks, two months in a children’s hospital for rehab and it was 9 months before he moved his leg or arm. He spent 20 months on a feeding tube and it took almost 3 years before he would stand.
