The legendary John Peel hosting a phantom fifty on BBC Radio 1

This chart came to be named the ‘Phantom Fifty’ by Peel himself, as part of the way through voting he suddenly aborted it, deciding not to tally the votes or broadcast it, instead playing a selection of his own favorite records of 1991 and session repeats

According to Peel himself he got into a bit bit of a ‘sulk’ when not many people were voting and decided to cancel the 1991 festive fifty. Peel was becoming disillusioned with his listeners’ tastes, complaining that there were too many “white boys with guitars” and not enough diversity. This trend of popular music continued in the early 90s, despite Peel’s championing of emerging of rave and dance acts on his show. Peel didn’t get around to compiling the Fifty until the following year, and didn’t broadcast it until 1993, where he played one song from it once a week

Great to hear this. Had a conversation the other day with somebody about a mutual friend we knew who used to tape John Peel´s show - but only the bits with him talking. Ha ha ha!

I fond a load of my sister's Peel tapes and was gutted to find she'd edited all her favourite tracks.....and cut off the talking in between!

I was lucky enough that he played one of my records when I was abou 19 years old and to hear him introducing your band was just amazing, I can still hear him rumbling away...unfortunately I didn't have a tape to hand.

I have a treasured Stowmarket postcard from Peel postmarked Stowmarket 21 January 1992 in which he writes "about the F50 - after 3 week I'd only had 97 entries and this persuaded me that there wasn't much point in going on with it. Afterwards loads of people wrote in expressing regret but enough is enough." Great to hear this all again.
