Terry Scales recounts his life. Born into a docker's family in Rotherhithe, he left school at 14 and went to Camberwell School of Art where he studied fine art. He later went to work on the docks himself, but always painted and left the docks for a career as an art teacher at Camberwell. When he retired after a 30 year career he devoted himself to painting full time,
which he still does. His paintings of the industrial riverside at Greenwich are a fascinating record of the everyday river scenes that have long since disappeared.
