Between Doo Wop & Disco: R&B Hits From The Jukebox

Between Doo Wop & Disco: R&B Hits From The Jukebox

Playing tracks by

The Trammps, Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Lollipops, The Exciters, The Shirelles and more.

R&B songs (mostly) from the pre-disco era (1958-1978), when you had to put a coin in the jukebox to hear the latest hits. It was before disco broke loose (after the success of the movie 'Saturday Night Fever') and discotheques were all over the place. The opening track from the Trammps sums it up best: it contains disco elements, but the vocals are based on doo wop and gospel. The song is the bridge between two periods, just like the uptempo soul track from Gladys Knight & the Pips. Enjoy! Check out my blog http://professoreddy.blogspot.nl/2013/09/between-doo-wop-disco-r-hits-from.html and my Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/djprofessoreddy/ as well! Next week I will strictly play classic seventies and early eighties soul. Picture from Taylor LaShae

Damn I love that track by Shuggie Otis!! I was doing beats with my friend a couple of years ago and we sampled that beautiful song.
Good compilation!

Well, a good dose of R&B anyway, especially that Exciters track of "Tell Him" since the version used was unfamiliar to me. The Gene Pitney number was the 'B' side to his only R&B hit. Also, although Del Shannon had an R&B hit too, it wasn't the one you chose, but the song is still a great choice (I'm familiar with the Presley version). I'm thinking of creating a mix of R&B tunes from 1977-78 soon based on the idea of this mix so thanks for sharing!

Professor Eddy

Thanks for your comment! That's right, Only Love Can Break Your Heart from Gene Pitney reached #16 on the Billboard R&B singles chart and Runway from Del Shannon went to #3 on the R&B chart, although their music is more 'R&B alike' than strictly R&B, just like the songs I chose to play. I'm looking forward to your R&B tunes form 1977-78!

Peter Garay

Loving the new Goldfrapp album! It's raining here but this mix is a ray of light.

Professor Eddy

Thanks a lot for your kind words! I love Goldfrapp too. Such good songs! By the way, it's very dark and wet in Holland as well. Autumn is arriving... :-(
