The Old Chapel Textile Centre tells the fascinating story of our community’s history through the picturesque art of textiles.
The Old Chapel Textile Centre is the home of the National Needlework Archive and the Country Wife mural. The Country wife textile mural was designed and made by Constance Howard. The craftwork features were by the WI, who are experts in the art of embroidery, and it is an icon of its’ time in terms of style, social content and a major example of the work of the Twentieth century’s most important textile artist.
In the millennium year, records were started to archive the work completed around the villages, recording the social history of that year in stitched heritage.
The collection grew from there to include OC H Banners, Kneelers, WI Textiles and the Country Wife Mural. Each piece of work detailing the social history of our villages throughout the ages
