When the term “shoegaze" was first coined, it referring to a group of blissed-out noise-pop artists who were all pushing the pop envelope by utilizing a multitude of effect pedals (thus staring at their shoes) creating lots of texture via walls of noise, all the while, at the center, buried, was still the actual song. It was a very exciting time for underground pop music and in hindsight could still be considered the last real creative movement in rock.
It could be said it all went back to the Velvet Underground but contemporaneous influences to this sound were Cocteau Twins, Jesus and Mary Chain, and US acts Husker Du and Dinosaur Jr.
This set provides some of the lesser known artists or cuts - but most importantly, these tunes are still fun to listen to, and, I feel, flow well together.
