The first in a short series about biography and memoir, this month's Time is Away celebrates the underground ‘filmer’ (his term) and poet, Jonas Mekas.

Mekas, who died at the age of 96 in January 2019, combined sound and image to forge a singular approach to autobiography. Splicing film, moment by brief moment, his body of work reflects on chance and memory, family and friendship, and the beauty of everyday life.
