Playing tracks by
Donald Byrd & The Blackbyrds, Maceo & All The Kings Men, Lloyd Price, Chambers Brothers, Fred Wesley & The Horny Horns and more.
When I started playing funky records around 1997/98 these tracks were part of my set list. I started DJ'ing as an extension of being a producer / musician /collector / digger and always loved that little thrill of accidently discovering samples that were used in hip hop.
Every time I would play in these little student bars and intimate venues It was sort of me revealing my finds to my crowd (to show em I'm out there in the trenches!!).
I never really recorded a mix with these tracks since I often try to go a little off the beaten track these days not yo dumb down how CLASSIC these tracks are. on many occasions now at Ljubljana's Zeleno Sonce party I used my time there to test drive new digs blended with well known funk jams. It was fun to throw together this little mix for them funky Slovenians.
It's like a trip down memory lane.
Its a like someone said play a DJ set you would have played when you where 20.
The difference is back then they probably would have been reissues.
