Ethio-esque
Inspired by the recent Hackney Globe Trotting Ethio-Shebeen, I put together some tracks mixing Dub, Jazz, Afrobeat and Hip Hop all with a distinctly Ethiopian flavour alongside a few classics from the Ethiopiques catalogue and inevitably some Mulatu Astatke including my favourite track from the recent Heliocentrics collaboration. Starting with a the woman dubbed Ethiopia’s ‘Aretha Franklin’ Aster Awake whose dubby hypnotic ‘Emammu’ clearly sets a template for the inspired Dub Colossus project, also included here. Had to include two cuts from the slept on Tommy T (also known as bassist from Gogol Bordello) album, one more trad-Ethio style and the other with the more Dub fusion sound. And couldn’t resist Cut Chemist’s dope mash up from his recent ‘Sound of The Police’ mixtape, and some bangin Hip Hop from K’Naan and Oh No. Not forgetting super exclusive Ethio-Cumbia(!!!) from the forthcoming Frente Cumbiero meets Mad Professor project.
