I opened this week’s show with Gone-Gone-Gone by Reginald Wale is a jazzy, funky 12-bar blues that set the tone nicely.
Over the next 2 hours I played classics from Massive Attack, Mos Def and Freddie Hubbard; more from last year’s ‘Blonde’ by Frank Ocean, 2017 releases from Thundercat, Hurray For The Riff Raff, Senegal’s superb Orchestra Baobab, beautifully unclassifiable music from Vietnam featuring Nguyên Lê & Ngo Hong Quang, London-based Latin from Dorance Lorza & Sexteto Café as well Latin music legend, Eddie Palmieri plus new re-issues from Combo Los Yogas, Pat Thomas and Fruko.
This week’s Big Tune was provided by Seun Kuti and the magnificent band he inherited from his dad, Fela: Egypt 80. Also in the mix were Bosq of Whiskey Barons, Oumou Sangare, Pocket Dragon, Coldcut et al, Cadenza (featuring one-to-watch, Jorja Smith, Seu Jorge and Jair Oliviera. Packed with goodness, as always.
