Interview with fiddler Jim Shumate

Interview with fiddler Jim Shumate

About the show

Interview with fiddler Jim Shumate, conducted October 2002 by Burgin Mathews. Shumate temporarily replaced fiddler Howdy Forrester in the earliest incarnation of Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys; when Monroe needed a new banjo player, Shumate introduced him to Earl Scruggs, thus initiating one of the essential collaborations of American music. Shumate died at the age of 91, in October of 2013.
