While we celebrate marriage equality throughout America, we're reminded of Marsha Shapiro & Louise Walpin, pioneers behind New Jersey's same sex marriage victory. Marsha & Louise explained how nothing could have prepared them for unforeseen stumbling blocks they faced while planning their son's funeral. Although a rabbi performed a religious ceremony for Marsha and Louise in 1992, and even though they had another civil union there in 2007 as the state expanded the rights offered to same-sex couples, none of these carried the weight and significance of a legally-recognized marriage in their home state. "No one should be refused to be recognized as parents" says Marsha & Louise. These unlikely heroes emerged victoriously in New Jersey's Supreme Court marriage equality fight in October 2013!
