Thirty years ago, on March 2, 1991, Serge Gainsbourg died at the age of 63.
My breakthrough into his vast universe came thanks to the discovery of his film music (“La Horse" with Jean Gabin in 1969), his reggae albums (“Aux armes & caetera" recorded in 1979 in Kingston with Sly &Robbie, and "Mauvaises Nouvelles des Etoiles" recorded in Nassau in 1981), "Melody Nelson" of course, or his other concept album "L'homme à la tête de chou”.
In this set, I gathered some of my favourite Serge Gainsbourg tracks and collaborations next to the many groups and artists inspired by his music with names as diverse as Massive Attack, Portishead, Beck, Danger Mouse, Luke Vibert, Fatboy Slim or Mick Harvey
Over and above the escapades and scandals, Serge Gainsbourg’s music was always progressive, as he never was content to stay in one place for too long.
