The Musicians Testament

The Musicians Testament

I have always felt at some distance from the heavy rock scene. It feels heavy, dangerous, destructive. I was indeed deeply affected by Buddy Holly's plane crash. I felt that the Beatles must have gone through hell sharpening their teeth in Hamburg. I imagined life on the road, sleeping in vans and motels, as being gruelling to the extreme. I am painfully aware of the casualty roster, and saw many descriptions of rock concert platforms collapsing. And what does it all achieve. I found that Johnny Cash's famous comment: "Success means being worried about everything except money" has proved an 'acid test' of people's integrity, distinguishing those taken in by superficial glitter from those. In terms of evaluating stardom, I had the good fortune of meeting David Bowie in his early days of organising the Beckenham Arts Laboratory. David Russell

I couldn't agree more. I was involved in the 'prog rock' scene in the 70s. But over the years because I have listened to all sorts of music classical, folk as well as rock and ethnic music...I feel that the joy of life and living as well as sad moments are not really expressed in heavy rock - as you say only violence and somewhat destructive. It is not easy to find more 'sensitive' venues these days where people want to listen to music rather than a loud rock band trying to compete with the noise in the pub. Thanks for you testament!
