Poetry should grab you by the collar in the street or whisper in your ear like a lover. Sadly, for some people, poetry is something they have only encountered in school or in a library.
The first of these Pop-Up Poetry events took place on the 13th September in Koko Hair and Beauty salon in Tunsgate, Guildford. A dozen poets gathered amongst the curling tongs and hairdriers to perform poems on the theme of 'Beauty'. Poets battled with popular notions of what is beautiful? Their poems were funny and quirky and sometimes profoundly serious. The performers included well-known local poet Dónall Dempsey and visiting Texan poet, Thom Woodruff. Other events planned for the series include evenings 'On Eating' in a local cafe, 'On Art' in an art space and 'On Death' in a churchyard. But in this first event, Dónall and Thom keep the audience hanging on their every word with their poems on prettiness, body consciousness and true beauty.
