In 1993 Dick Spicer co-founded the Humanist Association of Ireland. He pioneered Humanist ceremonies in this country and established the campaign to separate Church and State. Now, 25 years later, Dick speaks to his old friend and Humanist celebrant Brian Whiteside about how and why the HAI was started. He reveals how he was inspired by a comment made by Bishop Jeremiah Newman. He discusses the objectives of the HAI, the origins of non-religious ceremonies, the various campaigns for change in Irelands cultural perspective, the influence of the HAI on the second divorce referendum, his view on Atheist Ireland, the role of the HAI in community, and his suggestions for the future of Humanism in Ireland.
