Expecting the Unexpected?: the UK & the 2019 European elections

At our recent event in London, ECFR's Director Mark Leonard and MEP candidates Laura Parker, Jan Vincent-Rostowski, Irina von Wiese and Shahrar Ali, moderated by Mary Kaldor, discussed what to expect from this week’s European elections in the United Kingdom.

With the UK now participating in the European Parliament elections, commentators have touted them as second referendum on Brexit. But what will mobilise voters to turn out, and what should we expect from the outcome? Taking place just two days before the European Parliament elections take place, our discussion was based on the ECFR/YouGov poll on UK attitudes towards areas such as migration, climate change and values in the context of the project ‘Unlock Europe’s Majority’ where we polled 46,000 individuals across 14 EU member states.

Why did Mark Leonard not discuss with any of the UK MEP candidates who actually have a good chance of being elected - the Brexit ones?

A little less europhile self-congratulation and a little more realism would be welcome.
